Hey everyone,

I found an Antec Truepower Quattro 1000W PSU for sale second hand. I'm looking to upgrade from my Antec HCG-520M and this seemed like a good deal at $100. I know that this is not a recently released model, but it does have very good reviews across the board.
My question is, does the fact that this is quite an old model of PSU mean I should avoid getting it as an upgrade? Or does it not matter that much as it is still a very good 1000w PSU.

Thanks in advance for any help :)

The PSU I linked is plenty both wattage and quality wise for that power hungry card. A high quality 650W unit can easily take up the R9 290X's load. Have a look at the PSU tier list linked in my signature, it is a good reference for determining PSU quality. A Tier 2 or higher PSU, of appropriate wattage, will be perfectly good.

Being used, it is a bit of a gamble as to how good the Quattro PSU works and for how long.

If the unit has been heavily loaded previously, then its useful life will have been reduced considerably owing to degradation of components due to aging and heavy loads. However, if the unit has only been (relatively) lightly loaded, then its useful life should be longer.

The HCG-520M is a very good PSU. Replacement of this unit with another should only be considered when the load is likely to exceed the capacity of the HCG-520M.

Thanks for the reply.
Yes I know my PSU is quite decent, but I'm planning on purchasing a better GPU which will make the load exceed the PSU's capacity.
Thank you for the info, I'm asking the seller about the length of time he has been using it.

Thanks for the reply, but I live in Australia, so unfortunately I can't buy off of newegg, and the 2nd hand one I am looking at is $100AUD. I'll take a look on some Australian sites though.

Prices are quite high there, should've mentioned in the original post. No worries, what GPU config are you planning for your rig? 1kW is a lot of wattage, and you may not really require that.

Just for reference, this is a good guide for wattage requirement for nearly all available GPU configs:

PSU requirements

The best you can get for around $100 quality and wattage wise is this PSU:

Power Supply: EVGA 750W 80+ Bronze Certified Semi-Modular ATX Power Supply ($115.00 @ Centre Com)

I'm planning on getting a AMD R9 290X. They can be pretty power hungry. I know 1000W is probably overkill for this card, but $100 dollars is an extremely good price for a 1000W PSU in Australia. I'm worried at the same price point that I may not be able to get enough watts or a high enough quality PSU.
