My free 6 month trial of Norton Anti-Virus is about to expire. Now the question is whether to keep Norton or jump ship. I have only really ever used Norton when considering anti-virus software. Norton might be bloatware but it's good bloatware. I was quite impressed with the 2004 version considering all of the trojan hourses that were avioded while surfing the interent.

This is a popular and FREE AV solution. I have used it for more than 6 mos without problems. People on secutity forums are fond of AVG Free also: AVG Anti-Virus Free Edition ... check it out. It rates high and the price is right.
Be sure to d/l the v7 (not the older v6)

Yeah, AVG is free and not to bad.
I personally don’t even use Anti-Virus, but at the same time I don’t download a bunch of files and if I do I’m sure there safe, because of the source. I also don’t go browsing in sites that I think can be unsafe, like hack sites or other sites that might give software away. I have my mail to where it doesn’t preview any mail and I get near to no junk mail and if I got something that needed to be open I wouldn’t unless I knew them and I don’t get enough of this mail to even bother scanning. The Anti- Virus slows my mail down from opening, so I uninstalled it. I sure wouldn’t want it on while searching the net, because it will slow it down, but the fact I play games I don’t want to be bothered with turning it on/off. Besides just because you have an Anti-Virus doesn’t make you 100% safe, since you have to manually scan the file and if you go to the wrong site someone might be able to take control of your computer, plus if the virus is a new virus the Anti-Virus might not help. I think having a fire wall on and having a pop up filter are more important, but that may depend if you download a lot and where from. In my case I feel I don’t need one and you might best decide if you do. I also feel if I did get a virus I should be able to tell and do something about it then, at least I hope.

Check out this comprehensive review of AV s/w

AV Reviews

AVG ver6 only caught about 69% of the virus on this test.

Of the free ones, AntiVir was the best.

As a counter-point to the previous poster, I'd recommend checking these forums for additional opinions (you'll find they love AVG Free v7):

Your choice ... but AVG looks good to a lot of people.

I wasn't dissing any av software, I was just stating a review, which I believe was unbiased, and stating the link and result of AVG ver 6.

It also includes reviews for NAV 2004 and McKaffe.

Information allows you to make the best choices, IMO.

Thanks folks. I'm going to go with AVG for now. I'd buy something but my broke ass graduate student budget says piss on that idea.

Maybe if I didn't drink soo much beer. All hell lets not even think about that!
