Anticipation Fodder / Upgrade Target for '06.

It's a long way off, but Tim Sweeney says that Unreal 3 will bring current FX and R9700+ card to their knees at 640x480, So if you were thinking about that R9800XT, maybe you should put off your purchase for 18 months.

It's funny, I'm sure that by the end of the year people will be talking about wanting to build 'a system that will be able to play Unreal3'.

Anywhoo, interesting read if not TOO revealing;

It was a very good article and I really enjoyed reading it, especially the quote that "Now is a great time because 3D hardware is coming out of the dark ages of being toy game acceleration technology, and morphing into highly-parallel general computing technology in its own right."

This year I am actually going to buy me'self a good Radeon card and start playing PC games again, because it finally seems as if developers are starting to catch up to the insane powers of the modern cards and the DX9 API. Perhaps there was a honeymoon period of becoming acquainted with the new tech., or time needed to develop more transparent tools for developers to utilise the new capabilities; hopefully the Quake 3's and Unreals will make way for a new era of immersive gameplay- evolutions as opposed to single steps.

that's when my GeForce 5 SX-1 can start kicking ass

Yeah I can just imagine.

"Which should I buy. The radeon 9300se or the PCX4300. I mostly play older games but of course want to be ready for Unreal 3 too."

Wow, this has to be the rudest (and many threads going off topic) tech forums I've ever visited.
Is there no moderating done around here?

Well. What a stunning use of logic and reasoning. How can I argue with that?
[/sarcasm]

I'm starting to get the feeling this forum is populated by allot of 12 year olds.

Not bad, all these replies and not one of them have anything to do with the original post, and lets face it, if your going to insult somebody at least do it tongue in cheek. ie: try and keep it friendly....

As for my dream machine for end of 2004/2005:

AMD 64 bit chip (or intel if there ready)
1 gig of DDR ram
PCI-X video card and MoBo if there up and running and actually perform, ATI or Nvidia whichever is faster.
Windows XP 64 BIT ( it'll crash so much faster than the 32 bit version)
2 x 10000 RPM SATO drives raided (in a striped configuration)
All in a micro ATX for LAN's
19" LCD so I don't break my back with my 19" CRT anymore.

A better job so that I can pay for it all !!

Hey SSssmeg, Phial was talking to/at GW, not you (look at the RE: field), however this is definitely for YOU. CoolS, GW, Phial and a few of the rest of us have a developed a certain healthy level of amicable contempt for each other. However we reserve our highest levels of contempt for people who look for a mod because they need someone to hold their hand while surfing; them as well as for people like rramjet and mulletboy.

Seriously, are you so juvenille and naive yourself that you need someone to filter your mail?

BTW, I'm not 12 I'm 10!

Actually 4 of them were related, and the rest I expected (because many of us are on the same wavelength [probably why there is so much noise and collisions]), ecepts I didn't expect someone else to try and mod my thread, OIE!

But yeah the dream machine is something that by the time this game hits shelves we'll likely see stuff that right now just had codenames, but no real specs. Who knows by then maybe the Power5 chips will be in gamers rigs, running 32X PXI-EX graphics card w/ cores built on the 0.9 process.

For a one-off post about the futulity of building for future games, I find it funy that this post has come to include the content it does.

As for paying for it, that's what selling your blood or an organ or two is good for.

Good to hear that it's an amicable thing you guys have going, those not in the know like myself just sit back and go WTF ?

As for selling blood, unfortunatly hear in AU blood is given away, you know, for the good of the comunity...so they can sell it back to you if you ever need it. and my organs i need at the moent so I shall hang on to them for a little while longer.

But your right, theres just no way that you can future proof your rig a year in advance, who knows direct X 10 might be out and be totally incompatable with anything we have, and 40 gig might be the norm for a single game.

Still, we can dream....I wonder what our kids will think of the games we play today when there old enough to get there own rig.

Yeah we Canadians give it away too (well we get donughts and Tim Hortons Coffee or Juice). Considering I'd have a coupla Gs so far if I were stateside, it would be nice to get paid, but hopefully the Red Cross uses the money saved for something more than just settling lawsuits.

Yeah, and really I bet my R9600P would work for another 2years, but I'd have o learn to play at 640x480 with 16bit colour and low settings, and that just wont do. Hopefully the next RIG the parts go in will be the last for a while, but I doubt the hardware inside will stay much longer than 12-18mths at a stretch (expcept if I can use they in conjunction with the new stuff (like the R9600P alongside the R423/RVXXX/R450 (depends on features), now that would be sweet, but unlikely).
