The last time i made a pc was back in 1996. Things have obviously changed within this period, and im more or less lost with regard to finding a cheap component supplier in the uk. Does anyone know of any here? ive used several search engines but i tend to get a good deal on onething and then bad deals on others... seems to be more trouble at the moment then its worth compaired to buying a premade system. Any links to these places would be appreciated - youd be saving me alot of trouble.

I don't know about particularly cheap, but I usually shop from these:

http://www.overclockers.co.uk
They're all fairly decent. Overclockers tends to be a little more expensive, so I generally only use them if I'm after something specific which I can't easily find elsewhere.

It's extremely difficult to match someone like DELL on price, if you just look at the basic specs (especially if you include software), but the systems I build tend to use much better enthusiast parts... So they overclock much better

They vary. Always wise to look around of course.

Often I'm after a specific thing, and it's not available on one of them. For instance, Dabs don't have XP mobile chips.
