any compatibility issues here?

My cpu is an amd a8-5500 at 3.2ghz quad core but I am thinking of upgrading to a gtx 970 (and upgrading my power supply) instead of integrated graphics but don't want it to be bottlenecked. Along with that I want to get a new case but not sure which nice ones are compatible with my motherboard.

GTX 970 will be a bit bottlenecked but don't worry about it.

What power supply are you upgrading to? It is important to choose a high quality PSU.

As for the case, any mATX or ATX case will do.

Your existing PC is pretty low spec, everything needs improving, and fitting a GTX970 is not guaranteed to work well.

IMHO you should sell your PC on ebay, and build a new one from scratch.

I want to eventually swap everything but I just don't have the budget right now and I'll have to save for a lot longer in order to get there

I agree with lodders...you should just build a brand new pc. I think 2 or 3 hundred is a fair price to sell your computer for. Post it on Craigslist so someone can just come test it and pick it up instead of Ebay where you have have to pay for shipping ebay fees and buyer complaints.
