There seems to be no fix for this at all. I think the game is just terribly coded for physx. I have a 980 and I use a an oc 770 for physx and frames still stop to 20s-30s when lots of physx is going, especially when using explosive guns that drop alot of particles.

Pre sequel is better but not by much.

Just dropping in a random thought here, but this strikes me as VERY odd...as Nvidia users you're having issues running BL2 with physx, dipping into the lower 30s even with dedicated Physx cards when I, with an AMD, get down to 40 at worst, and usually stay over it even in the most hectic moments.

Either they use old legacy function calls they haven't bothered to update, which is likely considering the age of the game, or CPU optimization for Physx is done much better. I otherwise can't explain this...

Besides that, the game is lots of fun even without Physx, but I guess that's just me. Different tastes for different people 😛

Things can get a bit choppy, but only in those intense battle scenes, particularly outside with vehicles. I found an overclock on my CPU completely solved the problem. I wouldn't say PhysX is poorly coded in this game, after all, it's one of the few that can run to some extent on AMD systems. Instead, it's the advanced level and quantity of effects, which are more than most PhysX games.

During heavy combat physx on high setting is still too demanding for even the current & latest CPU, it rely a lot on single threading power. Yes, hardware physx runs on the GPU, but it still need the CPU to feed it.

I had the same issue and went reading up on a lot of performance tweaks. Most only address the GPU not being powerful enough. But, for me that was not the issue, my gpu had more than enough power. Just the CPU was bottleneck when physx was on high.

Best work around is to reduce the allowed particle count . Default is set to unlimited which can go crazy on heavy fights with multiple players. https://www.reddit.com/r/Borderlands/comments/3xmzs2/hardware_for_60fps_with_physx_on_high/cy85c8b

3570K @ 4.4ghz, gtx980ti, max setting, physx high. With the tweak I am now able to maintain mostly 60fps even in heavy combat fire fights.
