Hi, Does anyone know of a freeware alternative
to EAGames 'Command and Conquer'? Basically,
you would play as a commander directing your troops
and telling them what to do through each mission (level),
by pointing and clicking. I have the actual Red Alert
version but it don't install on XP. Any suggestions?
Thanks.

There appears to be an Open Source clone of the game called "FreeCNC":

http://holarse.wue.de/freecnc/

It's available for Linux, Windows, Mac OS X, BeOS, and some Unix systems.

Enjoy!

Hi and thanks for the link, bill.
It looks like I might have to compile a game using my Read Alert and
Aftermath cd's. I have never done that before so I am reading all of the
documentation now. At first, I thought it was a loader for the win95 game,
but I read so far that it borrows the maps and sounds from the cd in order
to make a binary.
I will keep reading up on this,
Thanks,

Hi J.E.B

There is also a freeware game called Arrakis but I dont have a download link
you could try e-mailing stefan@dune2k.com
Official site is http://arrakis.dune2k.com/ or Ask this Newsgroup about
the game to find a working download
(Actually a clone of "Dune II, I think" )

But if you would rather get RedAlert working on XP (yes it can be done) go
it www.ccfilezone.vze.com search the site and if you need help contact the
webmaster and he will get you going.

hope this can help...

Thanks for the links fireryone,
I see Arrakis is still in devolopment, so I have bookmarked the link for
when
it is released. I downloaded the XP patch for the commercial game, but to
let
everyone know, I have always been interested in freeware games too ;-)
Thanks again,
J.E.B.

oh.. and by the way... NEVER call the C&C games EA games.... They are
Westwood games.. EA ruined the C&C series when the scrapped Westwood.

Hi, I have SP2 included with my XP Home, and the Red Alert XP patch didn't
work, I need to have the game installed before it will. If I try to intall
the cd directly, I get an error saying C&C is for Win95 only... can not
continue, or something like that. So I'll keep on searching for a freeware
alternative, or wait until I want to install ME again. I tried an older
version of Arrakis, and other simular games like clones of Dune II, and
they weren't working because I believe they were dos based games.
I always wondered what eagames had to do with Westwood, so thanks for the
info, and I understand completely, so from now on I will only refer to C&C
as a Westwood game.
