Any gains from Phenom X4 850 to 965 BE?

Been using my Phenom II x4 850 (Propus no L3 cache 🙁 ) for over a year now and I feel its time to upgrade. Currently using an MSI 870a-g54 and its been good to me so far so i just wanna upgrade the cpu now.

Im looking into the 965 BE on newegg, it's only $85 US and of course it has great reviews! I love the challenge of overclocking now and will of course be doing so on it if i get it that is! Oh and I'll be gaming only and it will be paired with a 7970 gpu.

Although I wanna upgrade, will i see any benefit in doing so from the 850?

I know i have loads of headroom for overclocking as I have a 850w psu, hyper 212+ cooler and live in a cold environment.


So, ill be clocking the 965 to over 4ghz for sure.


I feel like the 850 is bottlenecked and I don't see great fps in games like bf3. Will the upgrade and overclock raise my fps?

Im sorry to inform you but your motherboard is just terrible for overclocking.
If you buy the Phenom 965 and clock it at over 3.7 GHZ chances are your motherboard is going to get broken.

And a Phenom 965 at stock won't really be a huge upgrade for you.

The Phenom 850 might be bottlenecking but only in strategy and multiplayer games.

Your CPU is a bit faster than the Athlon II X4 645.


And by the way im pretty sure that your motherboard supports ACC (Advanced Clock Calibration).Just go in the bios and set it to auto and you may end up with a full Phenom core (6MB L3 Cache).



And if you really want to upgrade to a a faster CPU, then consider upgrading to a FX 6300.

I have overclocked the 850 to 3.96ghz with a 1.5 to voltage no problems for months with no crashes and passed prime 95 for over 12 hours no problem until i stopped it myself.

I know the 965 is totally different but would it really cause that much problems with this board i have?

Also I would upgrade to the FX series but my motherboard doesnt support it. I have the mainboard of the 870a g54 not the one that supports fx cpu's.

And for the unlocked L3 cache I don't see it in my motherboard options and its a propus so I know it doesnt have L3 only L2... But i have seen a couple people with the 850 with the Deneb name so im confused with this area still
