The PC version of BF3 automatically installs Punkbuster by default, so you should be fairly safe from hackers there.

Biggest thing I've found from online play (mostly from SWAT4 & Halo:CE) is to find a clan server. I don't mean join the clan, just look for clans that run multipler servers. AshClan, P0Q & BFM are major server providers in Halo:CE, for example. Their servers are open to both clan & non-clan players, but the clan members are good about keeping an eye out for potential hackers... & they don't just auto-ban/perma-ban you because someone whines & claims that you're aimbotting them, the server mod lets them see what's on your screen so they can determine if you're aimbotting/wall-hacking or not. They're also really big on players following the server rules (i.e. on a Halo:CE "race" server, your focus is supposed to be on getting a 'Hog & trying to complete laps, not on treating it like a "slayer" game).

now with BF3 and most other online games do i need an "online pass" iv never had to buy one separately on console so wasnt sure about pc games

Depends on the game. BF3 uses Origins' loader program, so you need to register an Origins ID. However, the registration is free, & is good for all of their games (i.e. Simpsons: Tapped Out, which I play on my iPod, uses my same Origins ID). Halo:CE doesn't require any separate login, you just specify the screen name you want within the game. Halo 2 uses a Windows Live ID, but again you can register for free. SWAT4 came with Gamespy as part of its install (which was also a free signup); Gamespy hasn't provided servers for them in over a year, but you can find SWAT4 (& Halo:CE) servers on XFire (which is another free service).

Basically, when it comes to PC games the only ones that actually will charge you a monthly fee are the MMOs, not the FPS games -- and even then, they'll usually offer at least "limited" free gameplay. Disney's Pirates of the Caribbean Online used to give you the option of "free" play or a monthly subscription: free play meant you were limited in how high you could build your skills, what ships you could buy, & what items/spells you could use; going to a monthly subscription meant you had full access to everything.

If there's one game you should probably avoid when it comes to multiplayer, it's Delta Force: Black Hawk Down (and the Team Sabre expansion). That one was definitely riddled with hackers & exploits.
