Any Idea Upgrading My Computer? (3 years old+)

I have had this PC for a little over 3 years now, but recently i have been wanting to get something better. Back when i bought it, I mostly played lower-end games(leagueoflegends) and it have worked fine for that!
Been wanting to get into editing and stuff for quite some time now, so this pc doesnt cut it for me anymore.
Is there anything i can do to upgrade it? or am i better of buying a new motherboard?

Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P, Socket-AM3+
XFX ProSeries Core Edition 550W PSU

AMD FX-4300 4-Core Processor
Gigabyte GA-970A-D3P, Socket-AM3+
XFX Radeon HD 7870 2GB GDDR5
Kingston SSDNow V300 120GB 2.5" OEM

Also have 8gb of RAM

Both Intel and AMD have new processors and motherboards coming out in January/February. My suggestion is to wait for these releases, as performance will be significantly improved on AMD's products. At the same time, prices on older stuff should fall. You can upgrade your current processor, but it would not be very cost effective with the new stuff right around the corner.

I was hoping that i could do something without going through the hassle of buying and installing a new motherboard, as I have never done it before.
So i guess the real question is if i can do anything with this motherboard or am I just better off scrapping it and buying a new?
Will probably a complete pc then.

As stated previously, you would be better off waiting a month to see what happens with new releases.

Use that time to save and come up with a budget as you will need a new CPU, new Motherboard and RAM (DDR4).. Also probably a new GPU.

The more realistic your budget, the better we can help you maximize it.

So I need to ugrade my whole rig? :/
Was hoping to able to not do this, there is no other avaiable solution for me?

You can upgrade your processor and GPU, the thing is, it's smarter to wait at this point. You could upgrade to like an FX 8350. and probably any GPU you wanted.. but you'd probably have to upgrade your Power Supply if you upgraded to both of those. Thing is... supposing you spent "X" amount of dollars on a processor... then find out in a month that you could have had double the performance for the same price... that's why its better to wait out a few more weeks

Okey, thanks was just wondering over my options. I guess im kind of looking into what i can do right now with this motherboard I have and if anything that i can do right now is attractive enough then i might go for that.
I know that they are about to release some new stuff but if my motherboard isnt compatible with then there is no need to wait for them .

But incase i wanna go for the easy upgrade what kind of cpu, gpu and psu can i get?

As for processor, i'd say FX 8350... for PSU, i have stuck with Corsair Modular, have several in various Wattage amounts... for GPU.. i'm wondering how much gaming vs how much editing do you plan to do... What games? what editing programs?

Right now for editing im using PS for photo and wanna start learning lightworks for video, will probably move into Adobe premiere pro this summer.
Games I dont really play that much, most recently i have played a bit of rust and h1z1.
Right now I cant even use Lightworks, its really choppy and apparently eats my cpu.
What do you think about getting some more RAM ?

As i told you earlier i dont really have any experience with hardware, what would a good workstation gpu be?

You would have to research that, or read reviews.. like.. go to Newegg, search for the workstation gpus by nvidia and amd... then find the ones in your price range, and read the reviews... look for reviewers who utilize those cards in the same manner and same programs you plan to use. Once you find a couple you're interested in, google em, read reviews from multiple websites and look for comparison benchmarking
