Yes I think the CPU for the MSI is a i7-8750H as it was the only one I could find given the specific specifications of the laptop. When I looked at the manufacturer site it wasn't listed but only the chipset hm370, still learning about hardware.

I am a little confused about the GPU on the MSI being weaker.
I assume its the 1060 mobile version, and comparing it the the 970m that's on the asus the gpu site seems to be showing the 1060 is better. https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Nvidia-GTX-970M-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1060-Mobile/m17319vsm164336
you've got me there, I did not notice 1060 was such a upgrade on mobile. I think that was maxQ version so more thermally constrained version...
1. chipset without CPU is worthless, you can still get full range of Pentium to i7 so its like asking what is better ferrari enzo or truck. its not a cpu so you have nothing to compare with.
I found an example of that model with this setup:

MSI GS63 i7-8750H/16GB/256+1TB/Win10 GTX1060
so I assume you will get similar one.
yes that cpu should be considerably stronger than your current one.

here is comparison of cpu alone:
https://cpu.userbenchmark.com/Compare/Intel-Core-i7-8750H-vs-Intel-Core-i7-4720HQ/m470418vsm20045

  1. GPU will be weaker than your current, its thinner laptop, there is not a lot of space for cooling.
  2. that is 2018 release if I see it correctly, if you can still choose, pick 2019 ones for better GPU at same price.
Check in details components you're getting, as they tend to cheap out on everything but what goes into marketing.
What you want is:
NVME SSD.
at least 1660 or 1650 ti.
at least 70% color accuracy with 350+ nits brightness.
16GB RAM

https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compa...-Nvidia-GTX-1060-Mobile-Max-Q/m17319vsm325746
But its still better than 970m which is a surprise for me.

Still its similar upgrade to going to never one:
https://gpu.userbenchmark.com/Compa...-Q-vs-Nvidia-GTX-1060-Mobile/m789578vsm164336
so its worth to get never one as you will see just a minor difference in price.
