Any issue with having 48 gbs of ram vs 32?

Hey, community!

I've been looking ahead at what I want to upgrade eventually on my PC, and I'm looking at the RAM. I want to upgrade to 48gbs (two 8gbs 3200MHz sticks and two 16gbs 3200MHz sticks). Would this be bad or worse off compared to just buying another two sticks of 8gbs? I know it's complete overkill, but my build as a whole is just trying to extreme futureproof as much as I can so that I can get through college and beyond without having to upgrade at all.

16GB alone should be plenty enough to get you through several years of college. I'd be more worried about bloatware building up on your machine than the amount of RAM you have. It's not like programs are suddenly going to start using four times more RAM than they do now.

The most overkill I would go is 32GB. I also do not recommend mixing memory. Although some motherboards will work fine with multiple different sticks of memory in them, others will only work if they're all the same. To be safe, I recommend buying a kit that has the capacity you need. A 4x8GB kit will be plenty.

Not a good idea to mix DRAM from different packages - even if the same exact model. That said, if you did decide to try 48GB ........ and .............. if all the sticks played nice, it's no problem...I ran 48GB on my Skylake for couple of months before grabbing a 64GB set

What do you do that you need 64GB?

At this point, on the Skylake, don't really have a 'need' for 64GB, but got a good deal on the set and am planning a X99/6900K rig, which I do want to run 64GB on, so grabbed the set and put it to use. Originally I had 32GB in the Skylake and was pushing it with VMs, video work etc, don't think I ever pushed over about 38GB when I had the 48GB in. Will prob drop the Skylake down to 32GB once I build the X99 (still trying to decide on mobo), as it will be the heavy duty workstation
