Any Mac gamers in here? Advice needed

Hi there. I have a question for any Macintosh users in the group. I've
been a huge Myst fan right from the start and have been waiting
feverishly since Exile for the 4th installment. However, I'm not sure I
have the specs required.

I have a dual 500Mhz G4 running 10.3.x, tons of hard disk space, a
great wodge of memory and an ATI Radeon Pro 9000. I also have a Pioneer
108 DVD+/-RW drive fitted. What concerns me is that the minimum
requirements for Revelation is 700Mhz or better. Would my dual CPU
machine be enough?

I downloaded the demo from MacGamefiles (142 meg) and gave it shot.
After digging through all the Windoze DLLs and double clicked the Mac
icon, the screen went blank for a second and then I was dumped back
down to the Finder. This is what makes me suspect I might not be
compatible 🙁

Also, I heard somewhere that the copy protection might cause the game
not to run on some DVDRW drives. I'd be interested if anyone has had
any problems with this.

TIA for any help. My credit card is burning a hole in my pocket!

(PS. Although I thought that Exile was cool, I considered Riven to be
better. How does Revelation compare to Exile?)

I use Windows XP so I can't answer your first question, but I can give
my opinion on your last one. I absolutely loved Riven and after
playing it I thought Exile was kind of a let-down. I didn't like some
of the Exile puzzles and the whole thing seemed kind of tedious.
Revelation is a lot more like Riven and I'm loving it so far. I think
it's all the cut scenes that make it more interesting, or maybe it's
the beautiful graphics, I'm not sure. It's just a lot more fun to
play than Exile was. I've had to use the in-game hint system a few
times, and that was nice, but you don't have to even enable it if you
don't want to.

Before I bought it I was a little worried that it might be another
dud, but it's definitely worth the price. I'm not sure that you can
get a refund, though, if you can't get it to work on your Mac. I seem
to remember a lot of complaints about URU not being returnable for any
reason,. (Several people had graphic card issues.) There's a list of
which video cards the game is compatible with and it's a pretty short
list. "At the time of release - ATI Radeon 7500-9600 or better, and
NVIDIA Geforce 2/4/FX families or better" were the only two listed.

Good luck.

Thanks for that Kate. I couldn't resist the pull from amazon any longer
and went ahead and bought it yesterday.

For Mac users, there was an issue with the demo and this was down to
the ZIP archive being decompressed incorrectly. File permissions on the
UNIX files weren't set correctly. Using the lastest version of StuffIt
Expander does the trick though.

Consequently, the demo then ran and my system didn't seem to have a
problem with it (although there is a slight delay when moving between
"nodes") which is why I then ordered it. And I am itching to get
started!

I loved Riven and spent about six months, on and off, working through
it. Exile was a bit of a let down although I loved the Voltaic age. I
have real high hopes for Revelation if it's as good as the demo. I love
the fact that you can get Atrus to read his own journal entries instead
of one just reading them! I also love the little touches like objects
making sounds when you touch them or the animated turning of book
pages.

I'm sure i'll come back to this group once I get started - I used to
hang out here a lot between the releases of Riven and Exile - so I'll
see you all soon!

I have the full version, and it runs fine on my TiBook's -RW drive. You can
even make an image of the second disc and play it without the disc in.

So much for the copy protection.
