Hi, I'm the "proud" owner of a "GATEWAY PROFILE 700 XL FOR BUSINESS"
(as it says on my invoice). It's a Pentium III 700MHz Profile, with
192MB of RAM and a 20GB disk (the best I could order in 2000). My
problem is, you guessed it, it needs service. Here is what happens:
- Plug the power brick into the wall, then plug into the computer.
- Press power button on face of Profile.
- Hard drive spins up, fan spins... but no green light on power LED on
the face of the Profile, and no screen activity.
- Turning the machine off (via holding down the power button for 4
seconds) results in a steady amber light
Gateway wants a MINIMUM $169 to repair; trade-in value toward a new
system was a whopping $33. I hate to just simply throw it away,
considering how much I paid for it. (Which I won't get into, because
it was obscene.)
What are my options? Part out the hard drive, RAM, CPU, and LCD and
sell those on ebay? If so, sell them combined or separate? Or should
I auction the entire thing in non-working status?
Or do I have the option of repairing it somehow (like, is a new power
supply brick a cheap way of testing)? Are there any error codes (POST
beeps, etc.) that I can enable? Any and all advice is appreciated.
And if anyone here wants it, I'll listen to all offers as well ;-)
Thanks in advance for any advice you can give.
