Just wondering if there are any other companies out there making graphics cards. I know of Nvidia and ATI/AMD but are there any others?

It'd be kinda nice to see a 3rd company in the gaming graphics card industry.

Solution

Nvidia and ATI (now part of AMD) send them packing. intel tried once to challenge nvidia/AMD in high performance graphic (means it should compete with nvidia/AMD flagship) with Larrabee but that also failed.

companies like 3DFX (which once one of the best and very notable with their GLIDE API) got bought by nvidia. Imagination Technologies (IMG) leave PC discrete gpu market and focus solely on mobile gpu (Power VR series). on mobile there are still plenty company making gpu like IMG (Power VR), Qualcomm (Adreno -...

At one point we had lots of companies trying their hand at it, but only nvidia and ATI (now AMD) have carried on being competitive.

3DFX should really still be around, but they dropped the ball big time. They had a huge performance margin over everyone for quite a while.

By the time the Geforce 256 DDR came out, the competition started to die off. Matrox made some great cards and kept up with the competition for a while, but I guess they decided they didnt want to continue investing the huge $$$.

So wait just go back. 3DFX like seriously?? Were they bankrupt or was nvidia cheating and decided to buy the competition??? But seriously I mean this would be the best time for a new desktop graphics company to join the competition and give amd and nvidia a run for their money.

Part of it because of competition itself. They got the lead but other company are not standing still either. I don't really know the story (i was still a kid back then and barely know what 3d card is) but i heard they were a bit late with their counter product. And when they finally arrive other company already coming up something that much more faster. That lead to their demise and nvidia end buying the company.

But the interesting part about this is that the trend nvidia has set in the graphics market favours them majority of the time tho. Curently we're here still falling for the teases amd has been giving but good Lord I can't wait till amd finally releases Zen and Polaris at least so that Intel and nvidia can be shaken a bit. But it'll still be nice to have a third contender in the ring so that it won't just be a two sided affair.

3DFX were the main guys for a long time, AMD and Nvidias competing cards were rubbish in comparison in the days of the Voodoo and Voodoo 2.

Unfortunately they screwed up on the Voodoo 3/4/5 series, it arrived late and wasnt as good as it should have been. Nvidia and AMD had caught up and overtaken by this point.
