Hello I am looking to upgrade my current rig and would like to know if this is a good path. I am not gonna upgrade my gpu for a while.

Proc: i3-7100 -----------------> i5-9400F

HDD: 2x1TB seagate
CPU Cooler: Gammaxx 400

or go ryzen?

I would like to save some $ dollars if i can for a gpu upgrade, ram prices are almost identical 10-15$ difference rgb/non=rgb are the same price too or could i still recycle my current rams? thanks for any help...

You would also need a BIOS update with a CPU that works with an earlier BIOS version before a i5-9400F would work.

I suggest using B365 Chipset model, which needs no such BIOS update.

there isnt a b365 chipset model yet in the store that sells them. i mainly use it for on gaming at 1080p and a workstation just microsoft office apps and some photoshop here and there, so is the intel a good path no need for a 12 thread cpu?

so is the h310m not worth it?

I think your plan is good.
9400F is approximately the same performance a ryzen 2600, perhaps a touch better in gaming because of better single thread performance.

The H320 motherboard needs bios F11 to run 9400F.
It was released 3/2019 so if you get new stock, you are ok.
I like the B360 motherboard better.
One of the capabilities is Optane support.
You can use a inexpensive 16gb optane card to cache your hard drives for better performance.

On ram, any 2 x 8gb is ok. Intel does not depend on ram speed so if a lesser speed gives you a significant saving you could go with that.
If your new kit matches your current ram in terms of speed, voltage and cas you might find that your old ram will work with it, giving you 24gb.
