They can help marginally in some cases. Probably not worthwhile unless you are really pushing the CPU hard for extended periods or shooting for big overclocks, etc.

It might make little or no difference. If you are a worry-wart or suffer from gadget envy, maybe you can't resist.

Are you highly impressed by pictures of thermal paste patterns?

One problem is you will have to estimate how much clamping pressure you want to use......23 percent of a rotation? 41%? How would you know the optimal amount? Youtube videos?????? Anecdotes on a forum? Optimal for you probably isn't the same as optimal for your friend Leroy because Leroy's hardware has slight differences measured in the thousandths of an inch.
