You could ad some dedicated GPU and upgrade RAM to at least 8GB, even better 16GB. Adding an SSD is always a good idea. Depending on level needed, you could swap CPU for I5 6600 or i7 6700.

so will an i7 6700 match the stock hp motherboard?

It should as it supports i3 of same generation.
