I recently bought this monitor:
https://www.bestbuy.ca/en-ca/product/acer-acer-24-144hz-1ms-gtg-tn-led-gaming-monitor-gn246hl-bbid-black-gn246hl-bbid/10363272.aspx?

and did not realize I need to have a hdmi and Dvi-d connected to the laptop that only has and hdmi and Usb 3.0. Does anyone has a solution or similar problem that is solved? Please reply as I already bough the monitor without knowing. Thanks!

Solution
Full 120hz on HDMI 2.0 *should* work externally at 1080p. You may have to disable the laptop screen for it to work properly on the external display.

For 144hz you need DisplayPort 1.4, HDMI 2.1 or Thunderbolt 3
The monitor and it's inputs are not necessarily the issue. A laptop with HMDI out probably won't output a 144Hz refresh rate. You need a laptop with a Displayport output and a GPU that will support 144Hz refresh.

On your equipment, try using an HDMI cable. You may be able to reach 120Hz refresh.

So are you sayin that I should buy an hdmi to dvi d cable? Please let me know specifically what I should do.
Thanks.
would this be the right cable?

My laptop: Dell Inspiron 15 5000 gaming

But I thought that my laptop has hdmi 2.0. Since it has hdmi 2.0 would I not be able to get at least 120hz. From hdmi 2.0 to Dvi-D Cable? Also What do mean It does not support 144hz as my laptop has hdmi 2.0?

Thank you. 120hz is a good enough upgrade from 60hz so I will get a Hdmi 2.0 to Dvi D adapter.
