Any way to get a full 1920x1080 resolution on an HDTV when the actual laptop resolution is 1600 x 900?

Sorry for the mess of a title. Basically, I want to use my HDTV as a monitor for my laptop for entertainment purposes. When I hook it up via HDMI, the resolution defaults to my laptops natural resolution, which is 1600 x 900. However, I'm given the option to use 1920 x 1080 as a resolution, when I switch to that, the screen is pretty much zoomed in, and looks a mess. Only parts of my desktop are seen, unlike when the resolution is set to 1600 x 900, where the entire desktop can be seen.

My question is, is it possible to use 1920 x 1080 as a resolution, and have it fit the screen resolution fully, rather than it being partially zoomed in?

Thanks in advance!
