What OS and current SATA controller mode? It can be done (a complete backup always is highly recommended before making modifications) as long as you set your SATA controller to RAID mode and then add the additional HD or SSD.

Once in RAID mode, add the new unit and follow Intel's procedure ("RAID Ready" to 2-drive RAID 1). HP provide a good procedure: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01386632&lc=en&cc=no You should obviously install the Intel tools before performing the migration.
