I been lurking on this NG for a few years, as well as dabbling in NLE off
and on during that time and trying to get further on the learning curve. I
do it mostly for the fun, and to justify the thousands of dollars spent on a
decent NLE system :)

Do any of you make money doing NLE, or we all just weekend warriors around
here? If so, how much can you make? I know this will vary greatly from
person-to-person, client-to-client, and project-to-project.....but just give
me some ideas.

Thanks.

There are several people here that are regularly working professional
video producers. But your question is more of a marketing/business
question than a technical one. You could change a couple of words
and post exactly the same question in several dozen different newsgroups
that have nothing to do with media production.

Oh, I don't know. I've heard a lot of experts look at this whole NLE thing
from many perspectives.
Each of us considers our niche as one of the main pieces of NLE. So there
is room for all.
It varies a lot for me based on the activites that show up on my calendar,
but I 've been getting between 17 and 45 thousand dollars a month.
Of course some of that gets rolled right back into NLE to make the process
do more quicker faster better. But I have been able to get the boat and the
trips and stuff. I have started a lecture series on NLE that will bring in
more money for me than NLE.
So yes NLE hs ben good for me.

You could just as easily have asked, "Do any of you make money with those
video cameras?" The video business requires a number of tools, either owned
or rented, to do the work. The tools are the least of the factors in
successfully turning a hobby into a business. I'd put relationships,
marketing, management, problem solving skills, and even writing ability
(although writers can be hired) much higher in the queue than any hardware.

Nice point Steven King! I am a professional video equipment reseller
living in Japan and I'm on the threshold of picking up a FCP NLE
system. I'm in the 'justifying my purchase' mode and have been
hestitating a bit. At least being a reseller allows me to constantly
have a ton of gear in stock and at my disposal. I'm in this NG today
just snooping around to get some feedback on FCP compared to other NLE
systems.

Best Wishes,
