Has anyone actually used a pcie x 1 card to hook up a ssd? Could you recommend a good card to do that with. What are the actual results? Can you really get the 5mb/s speeds pcie x 1 gets

you can get full sata 3 speed with one of these, running 2 drives simultaneously will saturate the bus though.
I use one on a board with only sata 2 ports, you need to be sure though if you want to do a windows install on the ssd that your bios uspports booting from drives connected to an external controller.
mine does but its just luck of the draw in that respect.

I do have sata 2 ports on my mobo(don't have sata 3). I read that a pcie x 1 sata 3 card will give you faster speeds(approx 5 mb/s).

I would like to clone my old hdd and move it to a ssd. Is there any way to tell iif my bios will allow me to boot to a ssd hooked to a pcie sata card before I buy one?

^ yeah mate id be kind of doubtful - they're bare basic boards.
You are aware that even on a sata 2 port you get a massive speed increase over a platter drive?

I originally ran my ssd on a native sata 2 port & was still getting 275mbs read times & a boot time of around 20seconds as opposed to 100mbs on my Seagate drive & around 1 minute boot up.
Its still worth buying a ssd & running on your sata 2 IMO - just don't stump up for the fastest drive- just go for the cheap Kingston, ocz or patriot models.

Thanks for the advice. Does cloning work well? My current hdd is only 141gb full but has lots of important programs I use on it. I wouldn't be able to fresh install windows and reload all the programs. My computer does have ahci mode in bios
