i have a friend thats planning on upgrading his pentium 2.8 northwood, but that only wants to buy ram or video, as upgrading the whole system is not an option. or should he go with a 6800gs or 7800gs?

or any ati options as well?
i have seen many X1000 series now

I would say that he spend the xtra bucks and buy the 7800GS as that will have considerably better FPS, I believe, than the 6800GS. ...The GeForce 7800GS definitely has serious horsepower and easily beats anything previous AGP offering from NVIDIA.... From an article at THG Graphics.

P.S. Currently, the fastest ATI card is the X850XT PE. I still say the 7800GS, as it has that shader thingy version 3.0, while the X850 doesn't. Kind of is the problem that was with BF2 in the beginning. We few people with GeForce Ti 4600's were the step between 1.3 to 1.4. The next card had 1.4, think it was the FX 5200. (I'm excluding the 4800)

Go for the 6800 GS. I seriously doubt whether or not anyone could really tell a difference between the two, and if they could, I doubt they would care. You can unlock the last 4 pipelines with Rivatuner which pretty much makes them perform exactly the same.

512 MB of video memory on a 6800 is really kind of pointless. By the time you fill up more than 256 MB, the GPU would probably not be able to process it at a good framerate.

Sorry, I thought my post might have been confusing. I'm saying that some people were angry when BF2 only supported 1.4 shader version and up. And there *may* be a time where X-series ATI card owners have a similar problem with future games.

P.S.I haven't seen a clear indication that 512 has a justifable increase in speed. The 7800GTX 512 is NOT an exception as the clock speeds are increased as well. The highest end cards, yet, include 512. Today, I think games can only utilize the 256.

Oh, yes. Yes, of course. And the 512 MB is good for bragging rights! lol, but yes, if you can get a reasonable OC out of it and the pipes, it will be good.

my friend currently owns a radeon9550
so choices are:
7800gs $300
6800gs $225
6800 512 $180
x1600PRO $135
theres the xgto but i dont know about that one
remember we're looking for price/performance ratio

Ah.. I thought there had to be some game on huge settings to get a boost. But I think putting 512 on that particular card is a little hype. It is not at all a bad thing, but if you can get the 256 for a considerable amount less, then...

Actually, games like Call of Duty2 and Doom3 on Ultra require more texture memory, this is where 512MB videocards come in.

Yes, but would a 6800 even be able to render those games in quality options high enough to use more than 256 MB? (At a good framerate)

he's going to be playing at 1024x768 because of his 15' LCD, with as much AA and AS asp possible. i can't seem to find a geforce 6800 256mb. do you also know anything about a radeon x800gto agp, ive heard theyre pretty good oc'ers.

Oh yeah, those GTO's can clock as high as the X850XT PE, some even higher. Then, I would say a eVGA 6800GS would suit you. They have an amazing warranty, I hear.

Is it just me, or are the AGP versions priced alot higher than the PCI-e versions?

I mean, look at the AGP version from eVGA

Core: 400
Memory: 1100
Price:225.00

PCI-e Version:

Core: 450
Memory:1050
Price: 169.00

Insane...The Leadtek which is 486/1100 is at 199!
