[SOLVED] Anyone else encountering random obscure file I/O bugs?

Ever since "upgrading" to Windows 11 last week, I've been noticing so many obscure little bugs, I created a new folder just to keep track of them.

Some examples:

  • Yesterday, I was working on an image using an old graphics program I've been using for years (Fireworks 8). I loaded the original image, made some minor changes and tried to save it with a new name (from "image2b.png" to "image2c.png".) When I checked, "image2c.png" was nowhere to be found. I found instead that the original "image2b.jpg" had been overwritten instead. Assuming I had just made a mistake, I undid all of my edits, resaved the original, and tried again... and again... and again. Three attempts to save a copy of the file to a new name in the same folder and each time it simply overwrote the original.

  • Another file-save from another program overwrote the original files with the wrong data from another version.

  • A 3D graphics program I use is applying two different textures to two objects that use the same texture.

  • When I started my computer today, my Account Username had change from "Mugsy's RapSheet" to "Mugsy's RapSheet RapSheet". I had to log into my MS/Outlook.com account to rename my username in my profile.
I don't have a virus. And multiple Disk Checks found no problems. I keep my system clean. I have a mixture of SSD, HDD, USB and an M2 boot drive in my system. Most of these issues are not reproducible on demand, making them hard to confirm, and I had no such trouble in Windows 10. So I'm asking if anyone else is experiencing similar file I/O issues?

TIA

Addendum: Just tried creating an email (from Firefox) which I intended to include a Twitter link using Twitter's own "Copy Link" function. I tried to paste the link. No link/text appeared, my cursor disappeared, and I could not backspace over it. I had to Abort canceling the email to get the editor to work again. Go back, copy the actually URL using the copy function, and paste that instead.

So, you have installed Windows 11 and have not encountered any File I/O issues?

That's what I need to know. Is it Windows 11 or my personal installation.

Hello!

Yes. I’ve installed Win11 clean and I had no issues with it, except the ones that were done by Microsoft intentionally:

•They’ve removed the drag & drop into taskbar option.

•The right-click menu sucks, because you must do an extra click for most options (like refreshing the page).

•Choosing a default app isn’t going to work as it did in Win10. Now you’ll have to also select the type of files that it will play (meaning, you’ll have to select a bunch of file types).

As a general rule: Be careful upgrading Windows installs. The only one I've ever had that was even remotely stable was going Vista->7. If you are getting bugs like this, I'd recommend just doing a re-format.

Yeah, THAT ain't happening.

I'll restore the backup I made of Win10 before I start over from scratch.

Do you even have Win11 installed to report if you are encountering issues?

Nope no intention to upgrade; by the time Win10 is OBE I'll probably be purchasing a new PC. My point still stands: Don't be shocked if Windows OS updates has some problems. It's fine to attempt, but you should always go into one on the expectation you'll need to reformat due to issues.

In File Explorer, make sure you are showing file name extensions.

I have "show extensions" enabled. And I'm obviously not overwriting the incorrect file if I'm giving it a new name. And a copy of the same file would have the same extension when saved anyway even if I had extensions hidden. I'm no newbie (check my Registration Date.)

I'll repeat my question since it seems not to be clear.

I've encountered random issues saving/editing files in Windows 11 that were not present in Windows 10 (I've actually started a list of bugs I'm finding with Win11, but file I/O is the most concerning.)

I've encountered files that don't open because Win11 (momentarily) didn't recognize the file type. I've saved copies of edited files only to discover... not only that was no new file created... but the new name I entered was ignored and my original file was overwritten. A a third party image viewer I was using for years under Win10, on this occasion displayed the old/original version of a file I just edited, but when viewed using the stock Windows Image Viewer, displayed the new edited copy (same file.) This is a (Samsung EVO) SSD drive, so it IS physically possible for both the original data and new version to exist simultaneously.

My question is whether anyone else is encountering odd/random file I/O issues since "upgrading" to Windows 11.

TIA

Hello!

Everytime you upgrade to a new OS, you should do a clean install (format the partitions etc.)

Re-installing Win11 clean should remove these bugs.
