I "upgraded" a friends PC from Win10 to Win11 who is now reporting his upload/download speed is about 10% of what it once was (a 90% reduction.)

He has cable based internet. I have DSL and have noticed no such drop in my bandwidth. I told him to re-check around 3am when his shared connection was not under heavy load, but his results barely improved.

He has tried multiple online speed tests, all with the same result (he runs these tests all the time. Did so under Win10 as well, which is where he's getting his baseline.)

A speed test over WiFi using his phone reports the same fast numbers as before, so it must be a PC issue. Either Windows or some app/process is eating up his bandwidth.

I haven't ruled out malware of some app running in the background, but the computer itself is running fine. Only his bandwidth has been affected.

So I'm wondering if any other Win11 users have noticed a dramatic drop in their bandwidth since "upgrading"?

TIA

Not my end. I noticed I seem to be a little faster but its not by a lot.

earlier today I had to restart my router as I was running slow but that fixed it for me. I couldn't blame windows for that one.

he could try updating ethernet drivers, that might help.

Hello!

Was this OS upgrade done through updates?
If the answer is “Yes”, then you should try re-installing Win11 clean!

PS: A clean Windows install does “miracles” sometimes.

finding background tasks isn't as easy on 11 as there isn't a list of them like there was in 10.
they only show in the Apps listing and you need to go into options for each one individually to turn them off.
So it doesn't show you which they are and also makes it hard to stop them... gee, I wonder if they don't want you to?
