Anyone familiar with Z-Wave or Home Automation?

I want to build a z wave network of devices around my home, but instead using a standard device to control them, I want to use software ran on a Windows or Linux PC to control the devices. Anyone familiar with this?

I'm mostly interested in z-wave but would consider zigbee.
