I'm looking to buy a 3070 as soon as I can, but I refuse to give scalpers anything above $50 more than the base price. I've never bought my own graphics card before (I'm currently renting a GTX 1080 from one of my friends) and as far as I know it isn't possible to pre order a card. Any tips for trying to navigate this hellish market?

Evga has a queue system for their cards. Go to their site, make an account, then find the card you want and sign up to be auto notified when it’s in stock/when the queue gets to you. Once it’s your turn, you’ll get an email and an 8 hour period in which they reserve the card for you to order. This is the best way to get an ampere card atm.

I went to my local retailer 30 minutes before opening on launch day (Oct 29). I managed to make a backorder (store had about a dozen Zotac 3070s and I was 6th in line but had my eyes set on Gigabyte Vision 3070) and was first in the queue.
The store finally received the cards (all 2 of them...tell me again why this whole mess wasn't almost purely a supply issue and much much less of a demand issue) from the manufacturer on Wednesday and I picked it up Thursday.
I was lucky for 2 reasons:
  1. The store had many multiple locations spread in kinda a tri-city area and the closest one to me is in a city with a demographic of not exactly PC gamers.
  2. All the guys in front of me were happy enough with the Zotac.
