True but if you really want speed, go with SAS and a good controller.

Naw just get 2 Seagate 500GB 32MB cache 7200.11 Sata ll hard drives and run them in raid 0. Save your self lots of money and spend it on a better video card.

the reason I ask is that I don't really want to get into the whole raid thing, just a larger faster drive if possible, want to keep it simple ya know. That's why i was wondering about the new raptors around the corner, size wise or speed wise as well, I have a 74gb and use it for os and games and a larger one for music and video.

SAS is the way to go if you dont mind the $$$ it costs. Acess time is better too. Then it can depend on what controller you want. The new Adaptec 5 series cards are VERY VERY fast!!! But this will cost you much more than SATA.
