I posted this q in another thread but got no answer. I have been trying other methods with no luck but I know the pxe can be done bc I have done it before but it has been a long time.

I have an xp disk I want to install on a Toshiba m200 from a desktop pc. the Toshiba does not have a dvd drive nor have I been able to get it to boot from one.I was really hoping to set this up for my kids.

can someone please help guide me through installing windows via pxe?

You will have to install something on the desktop that can provide a bootable environment. In Windows Server there's Windows Deployment Services. You could install Windows Server as a virtual machine on the desktop, but that's a bit of a hassle for just one installation.

What I would do in your case, is preparing a usb flash drive for the installation of XP. Then just boot off of that and install it.

I would imagine you would need to setup Internet Connection Sharing on the desktop (as a start) and then look at this link:

http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/magazine/2008.07.desktopfiles.aspx

However, this may not even be enough as ThomasJ93 indicates as the full services provided in a server environment are not available.

getochkn provided an even better solution for you, BTW, than trying to use PXE.
