Hi, I bought a galaxy s5 for my younger sister from over seas. I placed in my sim card to unlock it for it to be turned on, but it seems to not recognize it and remains locked.

My question is how do I go about region unlocking it for american use?

EDIT: I apologize if this is not in the right section.

Here is the verbage from Samsung, it was probably on a sticker on the box you purchased the device in.
“This product should be activated with a SIM card issued from a mobile operator within Europe. (as defined EU/EEA, Switzerland and the following Non-EEA countries Albania, Andorra, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Former Yugoslav Republic of Macedonia (F.Y.R.O.M), Monaco, Montenegro, San Marino, Serbia and Vatican City.),” a warning message reads on the European Galaxy S5 model. “To use SIM cards from other regions, a cumulative call over five minutes must first be made with the SIM card from European operators,”
Samsung has been region locking their devices. You need to use the device witha SIM card from the region that it was purchased first. Then it will be unlockable for other regions. I believe with the S5 you actually need to make a 5 minute phone call using that local card before it will unlock.
