Hello,

I have a need for some very intensive math operations, which do not scale across multiple CPU threads or cores, but really need the fastest CPU on the market to process one request at a time. IE, statistics, forecasting, etc...

RAM and disk needs are pretty modest (8GB and 100GB will do it). From a price perspective, that's probably the i7 980X?

Only problem is ... no one really sells the 980X in a 1U form factor. Do I have to get the $1000+ more expensive Xeon to get this done?

Thanks!

Supermicro has several single socket 1U LGA 1366 server kits. You do not want a core i7 980x instead you want a Xeon W3680, they are the exact same CPU. The Xeon w3680 has ECC memory support. Cost of a W3680 is the same as the 980x. Go for 12GB ram (3x 4GB ram modules DDR3-1333mhz ECC unbufferd)
