Having spent countless hours on ages-old version 0.305, I was very
excited to see a new release of IVAN. I must say I'm very impressed with
the improvements. The amount of new stuff is surely worth the wait af if
you haven't tried it already, this may well be the time to check out
this great game. When I started IVAN 0.50 for the first time I was
saying wow! at every new thing and it still continues to amaze me. The
only concern I have is that most of the new stuff doesn't have that
wacky humor which makes IVAN unique: new monsters are quite bland, and
gameplay improvements make the game scary, not fun. Yes, guys: mithril
bear traps are NOT funny. Iron stuff rusting from blood (and IVAN is the
bloodiest roguelike ever) is NOT funny. Acid rain (covering half of the
screen and destroying your boots) is NOT funny. Hedgehogs biting you in
the head so you lose consciousness are so NOT funny, it's not even
funny. Hmmm... So what's your opinions on it?

Hedgehogs are *always* funny and *violent* hedgehogs are hilarious.

There is no roguelike quite like IVAN, and I love playing it every so
often (although usually I take frustration breaks between one
unforeseen, comical death and the next 😛 )

For example, on a recent ish character that had just begun his adventure
through the underground passage:

You step in a iron bear trap and it traps your left leg.
<Insert some failed escape attempts>
As you attempt to escape you manage to trap your right leg.
<Thinks: Hmm, that's awkward...>
As you attempt to escape you manage to trap your right arm.
<Thinks: Oh, blimey, this just isn't my day.>
<Insert a few more failed escape attempts>
As you attempt to escape you manage to trap your left arm.
<Thinks: Uhm. Ok, enough of this, let me out already!>
<Some more failed attempts later...>
As you attempt to escape you manage to trap your head.
Your head bleeds.
*Vital bodypart in serious danager!*
<Thinks: EH!?...>
<One or two more attempts later...>
Your head bleeds badly.
You die.

This had me crippled up with laughter trying to visualise how on earth
my character managed to get himself into such a pathetic state. Is there
any worse way to die than by a killer bear trap with serious attitude?...

I just tried IVAN for the first time, and I must say that it has major
potential. Between the impressive graphics (complete with puddles of rain,
sweat, dog drool, blood, and vomit from that spoiled kiwi my hapless
adventurer ate), the damage system that lets you lop off monsters' limbs or
lose your own, the humor, and the gameplay, I'm definitely keeping my eye on
this one.

My last character died after getting caught in a mithril bear trap and
losing both legs and an arm while struggling to free himself. A hedgehog
came upon him. Although he valiantly attempted to kill it by squirting
blood in its general direction, it defeated him in the end. 🙁
