Question Anyone use metal based "twist ties with cutting tool" for cable ties in PC or is that a terrible idea?

I feel incredibly stupid even asking this.. years ago I took a chance on this and it's been working so far inside my desktop PC's but now I find myself nervous...

hopefully that link works but if not.. basically there's a metal part of the twist tie that looks like you can pull it upwards to cut the twist tie.. which I've never bothered with I just cut the twist tie with scissors :p , toss it and use a new one as need be.

I'm wondering if this is a terrible idea and if I should just throw out this bag of twist ties entirely.. the metal part seems to be lodged in there securely and I use them to tie cables in my desktop PC in such a way that I don't think there's much chance of it "rotating" towards the motherboard , or much chance of the metal part coming loose but.. I know if it did make contact with say the motherboard when it was up and running that would be BAD

(and yep just plain upgrading PC cases to those wonderful newer models where all the cables get routed into that handy dandy section in the back reducing or eliminating the need for twist ties is the plan.. years from now when the kids are out of college and I hopefully have the spare funds to upgrade their PC cases to something better :p )

Many of us fire employees that use such things on cables as they will cut the insulation and cause shorts. Velcro only on cable bundles.

Man I didn't know they were so dangerous ! thanks very much for that and for your quick response too :) ..

would this version without the metal cutting part work? (basically a twist tie cable that you lock into place and cut off and replace as needed )

if not are there velcro ties you could recommend from say the local home depot? :) Or if their velcro ties would be bad to use in a PC then a link to a place online with velcro ties safe to use in a PC? :)

It's only dangerous if the cable is rubbing up against the tie in such a way that it could potentially rub out the insulation. Or if you cut off the excess, it can be sharp enough to poke holes into something. If anything though, I think most things that use them for cable bundling have a sleeve of some sort around the cables at that point.

The other problem is if you pull it too tight. It makes it harder to cut it off.

When you said metal twist ties.. First thought "good god man, he wants to use bread ties..."

Glad that wasn't the cast lol. In all reality and being brutally honest, I've used zip ties (that the word you were looking for BTW lol) are fine as long as you aren't pulling in and moving wires constantly.

I've used them for 25+ years on electronics without issue, well until it's time to reorganize or upgrade. I've since switched to velcro or hiding the cables behind a desk if I think I will be switching things any time soon.

Pretty much anything would work even bread ties (they came with some cases years ago)
Just don't over secure anything it not like any of the wires will be moving or rubbing after you build it.

Bread ties?!? I got a chuckle out of reading that but .. heck if bread ties survived in a PC build that's actually kind of reassuring :p

thank you all so much for your kind replies and your time and attention spent answering my question I greatly appreciate it , as always you guys are awesome :)
