Anyone validate my suspicion of a dying PS3 HDD? Please?

I rarely play games on my ps3, but it is a 120gb slim model that is around three, if not four years old now.

I found last year whenever the devil may cry remake demo came out, the cutscenes stuttered TERRIBLY... thought that it was a poorly done demo. Just on the cutscenes. it was literally unwatchable. The retail game is much better on the same scene, streaming from the disc.

so.

1. A demo that does not use a disc stutters like crazy (happened as well with NHL14 or the last nhl game, which wouldnt even load the first time)

2. Got myself a used copy of fallout new vegas, it has stutter all throughout the audio on the overworld when just roaming around. broken up pops, stuttering audio.

also freezes for no reason and i need to literally unplug the console...

3. occasional freezes when moving from hulu+ or netflix to the XMB but these i can restart via the power button, three beeps and restarts.

4. then finally, the last of us last night. playing this was so disappointing. the first cinematic gave weird graphical glitches. The characters would shift from one place on screen to another for a fraction. also audio popping and stuttering.

finally get past the cutscene (which are real time rendered i guess) i still get the ambient sounds pop/stutter. similar to basically what happens in fallout new vegas.

from what i read this is what happens when the hard drive is failing, and i need to get a new one.
what with my budget, this means i invest $50, and that is fine... but cannot just spend it if thats not the likely problem.

there are no harsh mechanical sounds or anything. nothing to indicate failure.

Solutions i have tried:

1. cleaning the ps3 of dust (not opening, just using a vacuum and compressed air)
2. Making sure well ventilated.
3. game disks are fine, besides it happens with demos that do not use a disk.

oh yea, uncharted 2 just plain does NOT load, period. simply sits on the spinning sword... for an hour if i let it.

Ill get a 5400 500gb HDD but if it doesnt work, Frys will ding me a 15% restocking fee. not bad i guess to experiment, but am i wastigng my time?
