I have a Dual Link DVI-D cable going into a Sapphire AMD 290X. When I go into screen resolution to change the refresh rate to 120hz or 144hz for a monitor it goes black. I've downloaded the driver from AOC and have the most current AMD video divers installed. Is there any monitor/system configuration I'm missing?

Solution
While you are at it, if you have a displayport cable, you might try that. You may also want to try a different Dual Link DVI-D cable. Sometimes the cables are faulty, sometimes the ports on the graphics cards don't fully work correctly, just like most laptops do not support 144hz.

I shouldn't have to install an older driver to use new technology such as 144hz

Just because you shouldn't have to, doesn't mean it won't work. Don't hinder yourself with stubbornness.

Drivers have issues all the time. Often they break things in newer drivers. Sometimes rolling back to older drivers fixes a problem that newer drivers caused. People make the drivers, and people make mistakes.

It probably won't work, but it is something that should be tried.
