Hello,

I recently installed a new hard drive on a desktop and wanted to clone windows from the old SSD to the new HD.

The reason is I want to replace the SSD that has windows with a larger SSD NvMe.

So my plan is clone the current 256 SSD with windows to the new HD. Replace the SSDs and re- clone back to the SSD.

I am trying to use the free version of AOMEI backupper standard. However, it will not allow me to clone from the SSD to the HD.

I attached photos for elaboration and would greatly appreciate your advice.

Correct.
The Free version of AOEMI does not clone the OS drive.

The 30 day trial version of Macrium Reflect will do this.

But....some details about your system?
What motherboard?
What specific drives involved?

Thank you kindly for your reply.

My PC is an HP pavilion TG01.
Motherboard is HP 8906.
The drives involved are the SSD, which currently hold windows, and a newly placed 4T HD.

I meant specific details on the drives.
Both SSDs and the HDD.
Make/model.

SATA III? NVMe?

Your overall goal is to replace the current SSD with a new, larger SSD?

new SSD NVME
this is the new SSD I want to install.

New HD
This is the new HD I installed and want to clone windows to.

The current SSD that hold windows, is the standard HP pavilion Tg01 built in 256 GB SSD., which I want to replace.

Is EaseUS partition any good?

Thank you

Your motherboard has only 1 M.2 slot?

This is easily done with an Image, not a direct clone from A to B to C.

Macrium Reflect
https://www.macrium.com/reflectfree

All you need is sufficient free space on the HDD, to hold the contents of the original SSD.

1x m.2 slot with an Image

Assuming you have another drive (any type of drive) with sufficient free space to hold the entirety of your current m.2 drive:

1. Download and install Macrium Reflect
2. Run that, and create a Rescue CD or USB (you'll use this later). "Other Tasks". Create this on a small USB flash drive or DVD.
3. In the Macrium client, create an Image to some other drive. External USB HDD, maybe. Select all partitions. This results in a file of xxxx.mrimage
4. When done, power OFF.
5. Swap the 2 drives
6. Boot up from the Rescue USB you created earlier.
7. Restore (on the toolbar), and tell it where the Image is that you created in step 3, and which drive to apply it to...the new m.2
8. Go, and wait until it finishes.
9. That's all...this should work.

Hello,

Thank you kindly for all the support.

I installed the trial version of Macrium reflect.

When I try to clone the internal SSD that has windows to the internal HD that is newly installed and blank, I get an error and the process fails.

The pictures show more details.

Error 1
Error 2

Thank you!
I removed pagefile, restarted the PC and the cloning process seems to be working.

After this, can I remove the old SSD that had windows and boot from the clone on the HD?

I want to replace the old SSD with the new bigger one.

Yes.

But the Imaging process I outlined above would do the same, but without wiping out everything on the HDD.

Do you already have the new larger SSD?

The HDD had no data on it.

I do have the new SSD.

My plan is to replace the old SSD with the new one and then clone windows back to the new SSD and format the HDD.

So far, everything is working.

I finished the cloning process. Than I removed the old SSD and placed in the new one.

The small screw holding the old SSD fell behind the power supply at the bottom of the case 😭. I could not retrieve it. Fortunately, I had other screws.

Screwing the SSD was not easy lol.

The PC booted automatically! This really helped me appreciate the difference between an HD and an SSD. The booting was very slow.

I finished formatting the new SSD. Now I am using using Macrium reflect to clone windows back to the new SSD.

Here is a screen shot of the new disc management screen.

This has been an amazing learning experience.

At what point should I formate the HDD?

Disc management

In your DM pic, which drive is which?

At the end of this process, the FIRST thing you do is power OFF, physically disconnect ALL drives except the new SSD.
Power up, and verify it actually works with only the new drive.

The first drive is the 4t HDD that has the clone

the second drive is the old 1T HDD

The third is the new 1T SSD.

After the cloning is done, you’re recommending I disconnect the other two HDDs and boot the desktop?

Sure!

thank you kindly. I really appreciate your help.

Will keep you posted.

Are confirming that the SSD with the cloned windows work, do I format the HDD with the first OS clone?
I generally give it a day or two before wiping the source drive.

And its not just a simple format.
You need to Delete all partitions on that drive. A "format" will not get rid of the small boot partition.

I removed both HD drives and the new SSD booted normally.

Now I will reconnect the HD drives and boot from the SSD drive.

I reconnected all the old HDs after a successful boot from the new SSD.

Here is a screen shot of the the
Disc management
Before I disconnected the HHDs.

After reconnecting the old HDDs, I can’t get the old 1 TB HD to work.

I took pictures of the desk top. The red cable is for the new 4TB HDD that is working fine. The black cables are for the old HDD that the PC cannot recognize anymore.

Turns out that the old SATA cable connecting the old HDD stopped working. Fortunately, I had an extra SATA cable. When I used it, the old 1T HD worked again.

When I tried to launch the games already installed on the old HD, they would either not launch or crash shortly after. Games cloned on the SSD worked perfectly.

Any advise?

Drive letters the same as original?
