APM value on hard drives

I was having a few seconds lag on my external HD. After some research I figured it was due to the aggressive APM value on the drive (60h)
I can see for a main OS drive disabling it would be a good choice, but what values are best on drives that I only use for storing data?
Disabling = better performance, less head parking, but more heat, I guess?

What value do you recommend for minimal wear on these drives?

1) Internal drive that I dont use it frequently
2) External drive that I connect to my computer only when I need it

The 2.5`` hhd most like is 5400 rpm. Did all your external HDD are 2.5. One more think if you have index the files on that could help but not always. Not recommend you to disable APM for internal drive, special if you PC run 24/7.

First could you please tell us what interface your external drive is use to connect to your PC/laptop. Second you external HDD specification if you could provide them too. The lagg most time occurs when you connect the external drive to your platform and OS perform check after the check if you have APM enable for HDD it is normal to have some delay for the HDD to start spin again. To avoid all those delay you should disable APM for HDD and file check when connect external devices (USB/HDD).

The lag occurs on 2.5in external drive connected through usb 3.0. The drive inside was a WD blue. I disabled IntelliPark but it still feels laggy sometimes after idle. I have a couple more ext HDDs but this lag almost never happened on them.

For the external drive that I connect only when I need it, disabling APM seems okay. How about the internal drive? I feel like max performance on the not so much used hdd isn't good.
