Appdata folder unset?

So for some reason my appdata folder is no longer set. as in i can manually find the folder no problem but looking for it by typing %appdata% i get an error saying it can't be found. i'm currently trying to install discord and i can't since it can't find the folder. apparently my computer unset it somehow and i don't know how to fix it.
