apple batteries

Lithium Ion batteries are only rated for a certain number of cycles, they degrade over time.
If you treat them right (avoid overheating, charge at certain levels, etc) then they last longer. Once they start to fail the process tends to speed up as most people leave them plugged in too long, charge more often, etc.

Well maybe am outlier then because my Air Battery is on its 1250 cycles, 60%, 7 years, yah it needs replacing, but it hasn't exhibit the symptoms of a worn battery YET, no sudden discharge, the charge/discharge "curve" still smooth, it just doesn't last as long as when it was 100%, obviously. I couldn't be happier, this is my first ever Mac.
