Probably left over from some integration or unit test checked into a directory that it shouldn't be. Can't tell you how many times I've seen stuff like that from large development teams.

Or just as likely, a classic easter egg snuck in by a developer wanting to stick it to 'the man', in a futile protest , pretending to hold on to some integrity while continuing to collect their paycheck from poppa Tim.

You might be right about that, but especially at a company like Apple I'd expect it should be pretty easy to review whatever source control and logs they use for tracking development. It will be interesting if we ever get an "official" answer. In the meantime, if it's just an "easter egg", it's pretty remarkable it took five years to discover.
