I'm looking to upgrade my 6 year old black intel macbook with a bigger harddrive. What would you suggest ? how big can I go ?

I would advice you to save some money and get a new laptop. A 6 year or computer (even worse if it's a laptop) is not going to get much better with a hard drive upgrade.
