Apple's Mac Pro Gets Mocked in Taiwanese Animation

Apple is the cat's meow for content creation. You have obviously never used a Mac Pro for anything like heavy Photoshop, Premiere, Desktop Publishing, or anything that requires stability. I'm also a working DJ, and use my MacBookPro for any live performances. Reason? Apple is rock solid. Windows machines constantly have issues. Atleast 1 - 2 a night for the other guys in the booth.

WTH! 1-2 issues each night. I work for an organization that has around 400 computers with Windows, and even thought from time to time I have issues, they are still rare. If I had issues with them this often, like you describe, I would have shot myself in the head.

Probably because you're comparing a $1000+ MacBookPro to a $500 budget windows computer. Higher end windows machines are just as stable as OSX machines. (Not to say that OSX doesn't have better software tools for certain media applications)

"Only in your mind my young apprentice, only in your mind."

...seems like an appropriate quote right about now. ...and your Alienware was indeed cheaper.

read again smart guy... he is not talking about MS office applications . he was talking about heavy rendering applications that crashes in the middle of 2 days rendering. Those programs need super stability because they run full throttle for days some times to finish the rendering project. one hang all is gone.

Point out a digital content creation tool that is Mac-only besides Logic and Final Cut, rhinofart. (There are plenty that are PC-only- e.g. 3dsMax). Then tell the thousands of artists using Windows PCs to do work that they are using the wrong platform. Sure tip: Most VFX and game development houses are PC-based.

its hard to explain, if you do anything creative, you are expected to use a mac even though they no longer serve that purpose best, and if you dont use a mac, you are looked at as less professional by average people.

i may not be explaining it right...

...and that may be an antiquated stance.

its sad but its also true...

So very wrong. You're ready to throw Apple's hardware (and possibly also software?) under a bus, yet you give no reason why, outside of a bone-headed comparison to carpentry...

Set aside the inherent benefits of administrative simplicity and security of OS X (yeah, you'll never convince me that the 'doze registry is somehow less-complicated than a UNIX-style file hierarchy), the legions of advertising/production businesses/artists that rely on Mac-only software, and the general aesthetic quality of Mac hardware...Now tell me, what is it about this new Mac Pro you find so ridiculous?

Think it looks silly? Maybe it hasn't occurred to you that the cylindrical design nearly eliminates airflow/heat issues that have always plagued the boxy PC case? Or, that the decision to divorce the internal components from the obligatory 90 degree angle connections to the motherboard (used in nearly all computers for years) allows for improved cooling and a seriously-shrunken form factor? I CHALLENGE you to try to fit 2 video cards and this much processing power/storage into a PC with smaller dimensions and better cooling...even if you can imagine something and put it on paper, you won't be able to go out and just buy the parts for it. Someone is going to need to specially manufacture what you need.

The fact is that Apple is one of the few players with the wallet, connections, and innovative thinking to make it happen. Sure, someone else could've done it first, but they didn't. Doing something different doesn't always turn out for the best, but Apple has done something remarkable here, win or lose. Incidentally, this isn't the first time for the company; they did the same thing for the mobile phone some time ago. Oh, and also to the PC years earlier.

Granted, Tom's is a community of enthusiasts, and a lot of us enjoy crafting computers ourselves rather than paying (admittedly) grand amounts of money for pre-assembled machines. That doesn't mean this new Mac Pro a POS, or that its design is any less impressive.

In short, if you consider yourself a real enthusiast, understand the fact that different systems excel in different areas. Just because you prefer one system for all of your tasks does not mean that it's the best system for each one of them. 😉

Well put.

well, lets see here.
outside of "it looks better" and "im an artist and i need a creative computer" ill just throw those arguments away because of how stupid they are, ill also throw away the mac only software one too, just because i dont want to get into choise on windows and is also mac compatible.

lets look at it from a purely cost perspective.

you no longer have a way to add your own hardware, and apple at one point charged a grand for a 4gb of ram upgrade, getting a mac, and putting your own ram in it was something everyone with a brain did, and now you may be completely shackled to apple to set the price of EVERYTHING because they want to look special.

they are a hardware company first, they don't sell the stuff cheap and make it up in software, they gouge the hardware cost because people are stupid enough to pay it, with windows you have just as stable a computer if you don't crap it up with spyware, while having more hardware selection software and cheaper prices.

Dear kid, just because I do damn heavy content creation, I can say Apple sux at it. Regardless of what hardware they throw at it there is one essential flaw - OS X prioritizes itself AND NOT YOUR WORK OR APPLICATION. On many occasions (specially After Effects) OS X would terminate my application and kill my work because the computer ran out of resources. On my home WINDOWS machine however, the COMPUTER WILL FREZZE for 5/10/30 MINUTES BUT COMPLETE THE TASK! I am talking of projects filling 32 gigs of ram and 32 gigs of page file. I am talking about Maya rendering that makes every damn frame in 50 MBs. Windows can freeze, start running sluggish but it will complete your tasks, while your beloved OS X will just kill your processes to ensure the "stability" of the operating system. Also judging by your artsy name and the specs you posted, I do believe you are very into content creation.

P.S Creating sound requires a lot less hardware than creating visuals. It's not that I try to disrespect all sound guys (I even do some basic sound design myself, when there is no other college available), it is a very important aspect of content creation, but this is just how technology works.

P.S.2 Most of my Photo shop files are 4 gigs and above ( they go up to 20 gigs of RAM usage while in progress) . I mainly do 10K square textures.

That's hilarious, thanks for making me laugh.
I've had a grand total of 0 BSODs/program crashes/system instabilities in past 5 years if you allow me to exclude the issues caused by my fault POS razer keyboard on both Windows 7 and 8.
My systems have been heavily overclocked all this time, too.

On the other hand, I'd be delusional just like you if I paid 50% extra or more for last year's hardware.

Really?? These two sentences say otherwise:

"I'm also a working DJ, and use my MacBookPro for any live performances."
"Windows machines constantly have issues. Atleast 1 - 2 a night for the other guys in the booth."

I only find one thing ridiculous in the Mac Pro, and why I prefer the older ones. And that is lack of expandability. Let's say I want to do a heavy rendering and i need more GPU horsepower than what it already has? On the old one I could put four graphics cars in this It's only two. Not only that they will most likely never be upgradable, so you're stuck with those two GPUs for the rest of your Mac's life. I guess Apple thought they were designing the Mac Maxi instead of the Mac Pro. And the most amusing thing is they call it the most expandable mac pro ever created.

I really don't understand the whole PC vs MAC vs Linux, iPhone vs Android vs Windows, Mercedes vs Audi vs Volvo, Vanilla vs Chocolate, Apples vs Oranges...

I mean vote with your money, don't buy oranges buy bananas. Simple as that. If you don't like the product don't whinge about it.

I bought a Mac Book Pro unibody 17 inch in very early 2009 and I've used it and still using it for work. It's simply great. But when it comes to performance products I rather build something that makes it a lot cheaper.

Vote with your wallet, simple as that.
