Applying thermal paste to a vertical motherboard

Pretty much what the topic says. I'd like to apply paste, but I don't want to have to unplug stuff etc. to get the case on its side. Applying upright would be easier.

Also, I have thermaltake paste already, but should I shell out for Gelid GC-Extreme for better temperatures?

Thanks

Solution

A bit confused here.
You don't apply thermal paste to the motherboard, but rather to the CPU.

With the CPU installed, you can apply it "vertically".
Or, you can lay the case over on its side for a few minutes while you apply the paste.

Thermaltake will be fine as long as it isn't dry.

How is your cooler attached? Which CPU cooler is it? Pushpins or bolts?

Most modern cases have a cutout behind the CPU like

. The user removes the side panel and has access. That's not necessary if they have the push, and twist? connectors.

You do need to exercise caution. Gravity works pretty good so if you aren't careful the cooler can easily fall or damage the CPU.
