thinking of building new computer, using amd. ( im a fan boy and prefer amd).
computer usage, general computing, games, and rendering 3d from blender.
i have a small budget i will be working with $1,000.
my biggest concern is future proof. i like the FX chips thinking of a 6300 for starters, but i am concerned that amd is moving away from the fx line, and will only develope apu's.
are the apu's able to do decently for general aplications? rendering for game engines like cryengine and UDK.
can i use any GPU with a apu or are there restrictions?
just need advise, which way to focus my research.
thanks in advance

By the time an apu is made that...
Not really.... there is no reason to get an apu. I'd recommend going for broke and get an 8 core. Rendering and even gaming will start taking advantage of it, and I doubt kavari will out perform an FX 8320/50 in any meaningful way. With the way the FM socket has been going, it will likely see a refresh (ie: not worth upgrading for) then FM3 will probably hit so no matter what you'd have to get a new Mobo.

If you want to AMD and want to render, go with an 8 core, either the 8320 or 8350 would do you well and won't be outclassed by any upcoming apu until excavator.

thanks for prompt reply,
i just worry the fx line is being discontinued, it would suck to buy a part that has no upgrade path.

Im sorry but there is no future proof in the pc industry if your a die hard amd fan go the 6300 then you could upgrade to a 8350 later the apu is good for what it is but it will be a very long time before they surpass the newer fx line ...with the budget you have you could do a nice system btw I have all amd systems too at this time but a lot of people are going to recommend you go with a I 5 and 4670 chip from intel and board and so on.

ya, i have been sneaking around these forums to learn that fan boys are pushing intel. i just have no repspect for that company over the years ive become a grumpy mean old man towards intel 😛

By the time an apu is made that will outperform an 8320 or 8350 you'd have to get a new mobo for ddr4 anyway.

look at it this way. Lets say kavari will have about 15% more performance per core than an 8350. the 8350 has 100% more cores than kavari so kavari needs to make up 100% performance to break even. 4 x 15 is 60. so you'd be losing 40% performance in rendering which will use 8 cores to their fullest.

gaming is even more complicated because not having an L3 cache and having half the Floating Point Units leaves an APU at a severe disadvantage. And we're also seeing more games come out that make use of 8 cores.

Long story short, you will not get better performance for your uses until AMD makes an excavator based APU at the earliest. and even then, the performance difference won't be major. And WILL require a motherboard upgrade due to DDR4 ram. The only other feature Kavari will have is native PCIE 3.0 support, but even then the performance differences right now are so minor between PCIE 2.0 and PCIE 3.0 that it doesn't even matter.

Whether or not AMD discontinues the FX doesn't change the fact that the 8350 will be their best performing CPU for a while yet.

I can recognize the advantages and disadvantages of both platforms. Honestly I'm with you, I'll personally use AMD cpus over intels. I will recommend them to others however, based on needs and what not.

Honestly, an 8350 would likely out perform an i5 in rendering and just a bit lower than an i5 in gaming so there is value to be had with that :)
