So a buddy of mine recently got an APU rig off of his grandpa for free (woot woot)
2tb hard drive
8gb ram
AMD a10-5700 (7660D iGPU)
300w PSU

So hears the plan, 250$ upgrades.
getting a 550w PSU
8gb g.skill ram
which totals too like 120$
Now is it better too run this in cfx with a 6670?
Or would he see better performance out of a normal cpu/gpu set-up.
If the cfx is better we will go with the 6670 amd
if it isn't we plan on using a 6970 amd

Solution
Why replace the RAM ?
Its $80 and will only make a tiny improvement, if any .
Spend that $80 on the graphics and you get real performance increase .

A CX 600 is a good workable psu
CFX has problems with game support, so go with a single card. I would recommend looking on eBay and getting a decent used one. My 7950 cost about $110, and it's very common to see an R9 270x for a similar price.

Remember to get a quality 550w PSU from this list of brands tier 1-2 -> http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-1804779/power-supply-unit-tier-list.html . Having your friends computer explode is probably not on your list of things to do. Always invest well in this component. As far as the GPU goes go for at least an R7 260X which should be around the 6970's cost new it is about the same speed but is newer and uses a lot less power.

If the purpose of this machine is gaming though you could hold off on adding the extra 8GB of memory and just focus on a faster GPU and better PSU.
