Apparently I'm supposed to bring this trolls head to Lenton, but the guy's
busy attacking a combat dummy and won't talk to me. What gives?

That sure is a maddening bug, isn't it?

Press the ` or ~ key so that a typing prompt appears. Type DebugMode=1
(this is case sensitive) and hit Enter. Press ` or ~ again so that the
typing prompt reappears, and type dm_setfactiondefender and hit Enter.
It should enter targeting mode; click on Lenton. Then press ` or ~ and
type DebugMode=0 and hit Enter. After a brief wait, he should calm down.

Okay. It finally worked. It took a while, Lenton still wouldn't respond
and went back to attacking the dummy after a few seconds. I had to click on
him frantically, there must be a very small window of opportunity where this
works.

If you can cast spells or use wands, casting Charm on him works too.

Have you downloaded the latest patches? That can solve a bunch of
strange problems (bugs).
