are 12gb of rams good for gaming ??

i have now 20 gb of ram and i want to sell (2x4gb) kingstone hyper blu
because i want to get i7-4790k and pcpartpicker said that i will damage my CPU because the the kingstone has 1.65v that is greater than recommended maximum which is 1.5v

You should get 2 x 4gb 1.5v ram eg 2 x 4gb 1866 cl9 1.5v eg GSkill Ares.

Buy a kit. Don't put different sticks in. They won't work.

The 1.65 sticks won't damage a Haswell, Intel certifies lots of sets of 1.65, 1.5 is simply the recommended voltage for base 1333/1600 sticks

2400 with 1.65v maybe. Or 1600 with 1.5v

Most likely not. The only guarantee you get is when you use a tested ram kit - 2 x 4gb

No one said anything about an i7.

But you were asked for the exact model(s) of ram that you have.

The original poster stated he was buying the i7. The person you just responded to is the original poster. Why are you going off about dual-channel RAM? It's not required for you to have a dual-channel RAM set.


For the original poster -

12GB of RAM is fine.
You don't need to have the same RAM chip. You can have different RAM chips installed and it work fine. You just have to adjust the settings in your BIOS to account for differences. Right now, I have 2 different types of RAM in my PC working fine, at 12GB total. That's 1 set of 2x4gb, and 1 set of 2x2gb.

Make sure you put 2 chips of matching RAM in matching slots.

Your current RAM can do fine in your system, so long as you adjust the settings down to the settings dictated in the SPD for 1.5v. It will not be as fast, however it will work. I currently have RAM that is 1.65v running at 1.5v, but at 1333 instead of 1600.

With 20GB of RAM, and you having a 2x4gb that you're selling, I wonder what you have as your other RAM, as it's likely a 1x4gb and a 1x8gb, but perhaps you have more than 4 RAM slots.



Going back to the original question, once again,

are 12gb of rams good for gaming ??

Yes, 12GB of RAM is good for a Gaming PC.

+1 except for true tri-channel sets which aren't really applicable here. Mixing DRAM from different packages is a 50/50 crapshoot
