hi.
I have a server dual xeon board and I just discover it does not have 16x pcie only 8

I found on ebay adapter from 1,2,4,8 to 16 will it work with my quadro fx580?

Solution

Most server motherboards use 16x slots, even if only 4 or 8 PCIe lanes are connected. The full width slot allows all cards to be installed in the motherboard even if they are unable to negotiate a full width link speed.

For example, it is possible to insert a PCIe 1x card into a PCIe 16x slot. It will not latch in, but it will run at PCIe 1x. The same is true for PCIe 4x and PCIe 8x cards.

The converse is also true. A PCIe 16x card can be cut down to fit into a PCIe 1x, 4x, or 8x slot (don't do this), and it will work. This can be tested without cutting the card...

This can be tested without cutting the card by placing scotch tape over the appropriate pins and inserting it into a 16x slot. This is how PCIe bandwidth benchmarks are performed.

thank you all for replaying.

I do have a 16x slot in 8x mode witch not work with the card that's the reason I discovered it support only 8x than if I understand it from what you say the 8 to 16 wont work. I do have 16x place the card fit perfectly but it dose not show anything on the screen and the fan is always on maximum.

any suggestion?

Something else is wrong. That is not the fault of the slot. It may be a firmware compatibility issue. Without knowing more about your workstation I can't tell you for sure.

Ha you're right! There is a boot graphic option on the bios it was set on on board vga i set it to of board vga and the catd started to work!! Fan is ok now and screen🙂 thank you all!!!

Glad to hear it!
