Are AM3 CPUs still viable?

I have a rather old build but I don't play demanding games. The only games I play are Overwatch and Left 4 Dead 2.

I have an AM3 board with a Phenom x810 + Radeon 6850, asus m4a79xtd evo

Task manager has shown that my CPU has been running at 100% lately.

Should I upgrade to a stronger AM3 CPU? And will a RX 480 work on this computer?

You could try. OW and L4D2 is not really that demanding. Don't get rx 480 as your cpu will bottleneck it.

If you're going to upgrade, I would not get another AM3(+) CPU. Go with a Skylake build, or wait for Zen/Kaby Lake late 2016/early 2017.
